Pierre Mendes-France

Page history last edited by Daniel Carrie 6 years ago

Pierre Mendès-France was a member of the autonomous socialist party (PSU) and one of the figureheads of the many left wing parties. He was seen as one of the leaders of the demonstration at the Charléty stadium where the trade unions and left wing parties, apart from the PCF and CGT, gathered to voice their disapproval of the outcome of the Grenelle negotiations. An interesting thing to note was the lack of any speech from Mendes -France during the demonstration.

Mendès-France was seen as the provincial man to elevate France from the crisis of may 68 but his silence at the demonstration was criticised as it could have been a moment of meaningful change. Many analysts believe that the demonstrations needed a clear voice and Mendès-France could have been the person to unite the movement. However with him not speaking at the demonstration there was a lack of any leader which lead to incoordination. This theme of incoordination was continued into the June elections with the relative ease of victory by de Gaulle as a consequence of the lack of unity the left projected(Broder,D. 2008).
