On 29th of May the government announced De Gaulle’s return home to prepare his speech for the radio and to rest after his trip to Romania.

Instead he took the helicopter to Baden-Baden which is home to the French forces in Germany. He was followed by his wife, son and family members. Significant politicians and the prime minister were un aware of his trip and like the rest of the country did not know where he was. As it turned out, De Gaulle had gone to see General Massu

Why did De Gaulle go?

Nobody really knew why he went but it was suggested by General Massu himself that De Gaulle had visited him in a state of desperation and considering resigning from his role as the President of France. It was claimed that De Gaulle believed the communists had the country in a state of paralysis. (Reference) Pompidou had to agree for the benefit of the country (explain he didn’t want people to panic and there was nobody to say otherwise).

Analysts thought that he went to get the support of the army to bully the communists into obedience. (reference)

Many believed he went to massu due to the fear of a coup d’etat by the communists and left wing forces( ref)

Reactions of the media

Thought he might have killed himself, think they said something like he went for a walk in the woods. (reference)

Did he disappear just to gain attention from the media, as this would lead to the french people panicking, as they initially had no president for a few hours and they did not know when he would return.
